11 quarry labourers injured in lightning strike in Thodupuzha

Thodupuzha: Eleven labourers were injured after being struck by lightning in Thodupuzha on Wednesday. The incident took place at a private quarry in Kachirapara, Alakode around 3.30 pm.

The injured have been identified as Munnar native Prakash (18), Kollam native Akhilesh (25), Erumeli native Ashwin Madhu (22), Tamil Nadu natives Dharmalingam (31), Vijay (31), Surya (20), Jayan (55), Pooppara native Raja, Marayoor native Madhanaraj (22) and Perumbavoor natives Ashokan (50) and John (32).

The labourers were struck by lightning while taking rest at a temporary shed near the quarry. They are undergoing treatment at three private hospitals in Thodupuzha. However, one person in their gang escaped without injury.

Of the injured, Raja and Madhanaraj, have been admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) owing to heart-related ailments. Prakash has suffered burns on his chest and back. The rest have sustained only minor injuries.
