MV Sajesh with his calf
Kankol (Kannur): A 11-month-old calf that produces milk has intrigued everyone in a village at Panoth in Kannur. MV Sajesh of Madathil house revealed that he has been milking his calf for the last 15 days. He received 3 litres of milk in the first week and in the second week, he could milk 5.5 litres. When he gave the milk sample to examine at the society, he found 8.8 per cent of fat and 8.5 SNF (Solids-Not-Fat) in it, similar to benefits of buffalo milk.
Sajesh had bought a jersey cow and calf in July 2021. But, soon the cow died of mastitis (swollen udder). Later, he started to feed the calf with ragi, peanuts and cattle feed.
Sajesh started to milk the calf two weeks back when he found the udder swollen. People have started to flock to the cattle shed of Sajesh to see the mysterious phenomenon, where a calf that had not delivered, gives milk.
Sajesh, who is a farmer, also rears goats, buffaloes and poultry. His mother MV Padmavathy, wife KV Sujitha, children- Sivada and Sivadarsh support him in all his ventures.
Veterinary surgeon Dr KC Arjun said that it is very rare for a calf to produce milk, especially such a considerable quantity. Variation of hormone can be a cause of this. However, it could be clarified only after a detailed scientific study.
