Kannur: The construction of the 1.1 km long overbridge proposed to tackle the traffic congestion in Kannur town will soon begin. The land acquisition for the project is almost complete.

The bridge lies between the premises of AKG hospital and Makkani and the DCC office. The bridge will have a width of 10.9 meters. Further, the service roads on either side of the bridge will have amenities like pathways and drainage system.

Rs 87 crore was allocated to provide compensation to around 200 landowners. The majority of building owners in the area have vacated their properties.

The overbridge has been a decade-long demand of people in the city due to constant traffic congestion. In the financial year 2016/17, Rs 130.87 crores were allocated for the project. However, the authorities need to submit a new estimate to reevaluate the project cost.
