‘We ran for life with kids’, survivors of Puthumala landslide remain in shock
Kalpetta: “We were running for life carrying our children. Many people who were with us are missing,” women who escaped from the severe landslide in Meppadi Puthumala on Thursday shared their experience.
Wayanad is shivering in the heavy rain that is continuing for many days. The flood and rain have taken Wayanad to another disaster on the first anniversary of the flood. Landslides occurred at Puthumala in Meppadi on Thursday by 5.30 in the evening. Mosque, temple and shelter home of labourers were completely damaged in the flood. About 50 persons are feared trapped under the debris. Four bodies have been recovered from here as of now.
Three concrete bridges and a car had washed away in the landslip. It is not yet conformed if the passengers in the car were saved. Apart from the labourers in the estate, people who were watching the calamity also were trapped in the tragedy, it is learnt.
The mothers at the relief camps said that they were running with the children to a safe place after hearing the loud noise of landslide. The migrant labourers working in the estates also are staying in the camps. The doctor at the camp said that people are totally depressed over the mishap.
At least 450 persons are trapped in Puthumala area alone as said by the escaped persons. Many families are still trapped in Chooralmala high school, Mundakkai and Elavayal. As rescuers are unable to reach the spot, the rescue operations are delayed.
