“They stripped off my undergarment and still no action?” asks Uber driver Shefeeq
In the recent times, assault has been a topic of hot discussion among Malayalees. In the wake of everyone voicing for women and making their stand stating ‘with her’, there is a helpless male victim in Kochi seeking justice after being beaten up by three women.
Shefeeq can’t even properly remember what happened the other day. After being severely injured and admitted to the Ernakulam General Hospital, he was discharged on September 23, 3 days after the incident. He still can’t figure out who will compensate the mental trauma and the embarrassment he had to undergo.
Shafeeq, an Uber driver in Kochi, was brutally beaten up by 3 women, who had opted for carpooling but then wanted the cab for themselves near Vyttila junction. They demanded to evict an already seated passenger and when Shefeeq refused they engaged in physical attack.
The most alarming was that the onlookers just watched the happenings indifferently, afraid to intervene against women. The only fact that can be drawn from this is the drawback of those women-friendly laws that provides support to women, no matter what.
“I was stripped off even my underwear,” says Shefeeq to mathrubhumi.com.
“I came to Kochi as a driver to make both ends meet. I am a very friendly person who do not fight with anyone. I am still puzzled why they behaved so cruelly like taking revenge on me,” Shefeeq adds.
“Is it because that I'm a driver or because I'm a male, justice is being denied to me,” asks Shefeeq.
Even though the women were arrested for the assault, which included hitting on head with stone, stripping in public, they were later released on bail. Even at a time where law permits to award punishment corresponding to murder crime for their activities, they walked out on bail.
This questions the verity that justice should be served to everyone despite their sex, cast and race.
But the women allege that the driver misbehaved with them. According to them the whole thing started with the driver verbally abusing them.
They say in the complaint that as per Shefeeq’s instruction, the other drivers joined him to trap them. They also allege that the injury on Shefeeq’s head is fake stating that the first picture given out by Uber Taxi Association doesn’t show this injury.
