‘Feel the Jail’ scheme in Kannur prison; Experience prison life for a day with fee
Kannur: The Central Prison here is likely to implement the ‘Feel the Jail’ scheme as part of jail tourism projects experimented in Telangana and other states. According to the scheme, people and tourists can experience the prison life for one day by paying a fee.
Earlier, the jail department had opined that the scheme has no scope in Kerala. However, the authorities now assume that the scheme can be implemented in Kannur prison as it has better facilities. The previous budget had allotted funds for setting up jail museum centring Viyyur Central Prison.
It is considered that Kannur Central Prison is ideal for starting the ‘Feel the Jail’ scheme as it is one of the oldest jails in the state. The prison was started in 1869. Along with setting up a museum in the jail, the Feel the Jail scheme is also planned. The assistance of District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) will be sought for the purpose.
Shoe factory in jail
The shoe factory in prisons will be started in the beginning of next year. Shoe factory will be established in Kannur Cheemeni open jail, Poojapura central prison and Viyyur prison. With the implementation of shoe factory, the shoes required for police officers and student police in the state can be made here.
A team headed by joint superintendent Vinod George had conducted a study after visiting similar factories in Vellore central prison and Puzhal central prison in Tamil Nadu. They use machines that are capable of making upto 16,000 shoes simultaneously.
