Kozhikode: Lok Sabha members Karti Chidambaram and Mahua Moitra extended support to CPM Rajya Sabha member John Brittas over the explanation sought over an article written by him in a newspaper.
Jagdeep Dhankhar, vice-president and the chairman of the Rajya Sabha, issued a show cause notice to Brittas for an article he wrote criticising union home minister Amit Shah. The notice was issued following a complaint claiming that the comments made in the article against Shah were seditious.

Brittas was asked to provide a written explanation for the article and was summoned by the Rajya Sabha secretariat. The VP heard Brittas' explanation before issuing the notice based on a complaint lodged by BJP state general secretary P Sudheer.
Congress MP Karti wrote on Twitter that Brittas was “being pulled up for articulating the truth.” Trinamool MP Mehua slammed the government and wrote: “Err… the Upper House is the RS, NOT the RSS. Someone please tell the powers that be.”
The show cause notice is for an article written in the Indian Express on February 20 slamming Shah's statements against Kerala. The home minister, while speaking at a party event in Karnataka earlier this year, said that only the BJP could keep Karnataka safe and “there is Kerala near you, I don’t want to talk much about it". This had drawn criticism from both the CPM and Congress. Brittas, in the article, stated that Shah's comment was violation of Section 153 A of the IPC (promoting enmity). He also argued that the home minister’s “periodic outbursts” against Kerala were due to his “desperation” and they were attempts to "turn India into a Hindu Rashtra.” He said “Kerala has tirelessly resisted his party’s designs."
