Sukhois, Mirages carry out trial landings on Agra-Lucknow Expressway
New Delhi: Three Mirage-2000s in the company of as many Sukhoi-30 MKIs carried out a touch and go landing on the newly constructed Agra-Lucknow Expressway.
According to Indian Air Force, the trial landings were undertaken on a portion of the Expressway.
The areas used for the landing used has an RCC construction and has been reinforced and appropriately marked to facilitate aircraft landings, says IAF.
The portion of the Expressway used for Monday's operations is located at Ganj Muradabad in Unnao District of Uttar Pradesh.
IAF Spokesperson said Air Marshal SBP Sinha, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Central Air Command was present at the venue to oversee the operations.
Many politicians from Uttar Pradesh were present to witness this unique mission.
"The aim of the exercise was to check feasibility of expressways being used as alternate airstrips in case of dire emergencies or non-availability of runway for any reason," the spokesperson said.
The entire operation began with the first three Mirages coming overhead at around 1 pm and culminated with a touch and go by the final SU-30 fighter jet half an hour later.
IAF fighters have carried out similar operations in the past as well.
