Shashi Tharoor lashes out at Kangana Ranaut; says she should learn some history
New Delhi: Congress leader and writer Shashi Tharoor lashed out at Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut for her controversial remarks on the freedom struggle and Mahatma Gandhi. Tharoor's criticism came in an interview with a news channel.
Kangana Ranaut's controversial statement was made on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of India's independence. “India did not get independence in 1947. It was a result of begging. The country became truly independent in 2014,” Kangana said.
Tharoor said Kangana Ranaut's remarks were nonsense and she should learn Indian history. He said, "If Kangana believes that Mahatma Gandhi begged the British for freedom instead of protesting and saying that I am violating your law because it is injustice, she seems to have no idea about the history and needs to read some history."
Tharoor also asked if it was the voice of a beggar to say, "If you want to punish me, do it, I can accept it." Mahatma Gandhi was unarmed and walked among hundred lathis freely. The freedom struggle was a progression of immense courage, moral strength and endurance.
Lala Lajpat Rai was killed following a lathi charge. His head was smashed during a non-violent protest. Tharoor said he was braver than going to kill someone with a gun.
