New Delhi: The Sabarimala Achara Samrakshana Samiti (custom protection committee) has filed a petition with the Supreme Court opposing the legalisation of same-sex marriages under the Special Marriage Act. The committee has requested the Constitution Bench to join the case as a party.

The petition was filed by Samiti chairman, Anoj Kumar. In the petition, it was argued that the Samiti is dedicated to preserving traditional cultures and values. Lawyer MR Abhilash, who filed the petition, stated legalising same-sex marriage would undermine the institution of marriage.

Senior advocate Mukul Rothagi, representing those advocating for the legalisation of same-sex marriage, argued before the Supreme Court that according to mythology, Ayyappan was born to Shiva and Vishnu.
