New Delhi: After LJD MP MV Shreyams Kumar moved a statutory motion in the Rajya Sabha against the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, the Upper House is likely to hold a discussion on the same.
Chairman Venkaiah Naidu admitted the motion and it will be taken for discussion in the House. Shreyams Kumar wanted the IT Intermediary rules to be annulled as it would adversely affect the freedom of the press.
The MP pointed out that though the rule was introduced to handle defamatory content on social media, the joint secretary of the ministry can block even news websites without much contemplation and this is a matter of concern.
Statutory motions are very rarely moved in Rajya Sabha. As per the rules, once it is admitted by the Chairman, the House must take up the matter for discussion within 30 working days.
Earlier, the Press Trust of India (PTI) has approached Supreme Court questioning the IT rules. MP Shreyams Kumar is a member of PTI board of directors.
