PCI restricts media from prioritizing suicide cases
New Delhi: The Press Council of India has issued a set of guidelines on reporting suicide cases in India. The council strictly directed the media to not give priority to suicide cases and disclose the details of the suicide.
As per the Mental Health Care Act, 2017, PCI also directed that the media shall not publish photograph or any other information in respect of person undergoing treatment at mental health establishment without the consent of the person with mental illness.
The Press Council of India adopted the guidelines in pursuance of World Health Organization report on preventing suicide: a resource for media professionals -2017.
As per the guidelines, media must not place stories about suicide prominently and unduly repeat such stories.
Media also restricted from sensationalizing and normalising suicide in the news reports. PCI also noted that suicide must not be glorified as a constructive solution to problems through media.
