Mangaluru: Two groups of students staying in the hostel of a college clashed at Gujjarakere in the city. Nine students, including 8 Malayalis, have been arrested in connection with the clashes based on the complaints lodged by the two groups.
Kollam natives Adarsh Premkumar (21), Vimalraj (20), Thrissur native Mohammed Nasif (21), Kozhikode native C Mohammed (20), Malappuram native Shaheed (20), Ernakulam natives Ken Johnson (19), Fahaad Manaf (21), and Abu Thahir (23) were arrested by Mangaluru South Police. The arrests are based on the complaints filed by both the groups against each other.
All the arrested are students of The Yenepoya Institute of Arts Science Commerce and Management in Mangaluru and clashed in front of the men’s hostel. City police commissioner N Shashi Kumar said that four out of the arrested were found to have used drugs.
Five policemen were injured when the groups attacked a team that arrived to pacify them. Further investigation is on, the sources said.
The local people alleged that the hostel students have been creating trouble for long which went out of control on Thursday.
During the clashes, some students had also tried to attack a police team, which reached the spot, by hurling stones.
Four cases have been registered relating to the clashes that took place. Two by the clashing groups, one by locals and another by the police.
