IS links: Police suspect money transactions
Kochi: The investigating team probing the case of missing Keralites’ IS links have received information that one of the accused in the case Arshid Qureshi collected fees for converting the Keralites. Qureshi was nabbed from Mumbai in a joint operation conducted by Kerala police and Anti-Terrorist Squad of Maharashtra police.
Qureshi’s friend Rizwan Khan is said to have converted Merin to Islam. The investigating team suspects that Merin's husband Yahiya had sent several people from Kerala to Qureshi.
The investigating team has decided to intensify the probe as it has become clear that a huge sum was charged by the accused for converting people.
Doubts exists whether the money was used for conversion or for terrorist activities. Qureshi's bank documents will be examined to know more about this matter.
Meanwhile, investigation has been intensifed on Qureshi's close relationship with controversial religious preacher Zakir Naik. Qureshi has close relations with the Islamic Research Foundation of Zakir Naik.
The investigating team is also probing whether Yahiya received any remuneration for bringing people to Qureshi and the identity of the people who were brought to Qureshi by Yahiya.
The police have recovered several marriage certificates from Rizwan Khan's flat in Mumbai. It is suspected that these people got married after converting to Islam.
The investigating team are collecting the complete details about the certificates. The team is examining whether any of these people are missing.
