Renowned news presenter and iconic face of Doordarshan English News Gitanjali Aiyar passed away on Wednesday.

Aiyar had been a news presenter for more than three decades. Interestingly, she received the Best Anchor Person award four times.

Acting, corporate communication, advertising, government liaison, and marketing are the other major areas where Aiyar proved her excellence. She had a stint at All India Radio also.

Netizens have taken to their social media handles to pay rich rich tributes. A Twitter user, @churumuri, wrote, ''Deeply saddened by the passing of Geetanjali Aiyar nee Ambegaonkar. The Taj Group executive was on one of the sober faces of Doordarshan in its heyday; the svelte actor in Sridhar Kshirsagar’s TV drama ‘Khandaan’; and a model for everything from Solidaire to Marmite..''

Another Facebook user Rajani Nair posted, ''Me , A Malayalam medium Girl from Kerala, in her teens was transplanted against her will to Delhi in 1974. All she had was an uncontrollable desire to make it big in life!! Realised that good English is one of the best ingredients for success!..fondly remember the days when Gitanjali Aiyar graced our TV screens, in the 70s, leaving an indelible mark on our news-watching experiences...My father told me to watch English news every day by Gitanjali Aiyer and Neeti Raveendran ! I must confess 50% of my success in career I owe to them!''.
