Farm bills to benefit corporates in and outside India, says AK Antony
New Delhi: Senior Congress leader AK Antony responded that the farm bills passed by the Parliament would leave the farmers in the country in huge crisis.
The two agricultural reform bills — the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020 and the Farming Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020 — were cleared by voice vote in Parliament on Monday. The Opposition protested against it and stormed the well of the House demanding the bills be sent to a select committee.
Antony, while speaking at the Super Prime Time discussion in Mathrubhumi News, said that the bills sacrifice the interests of the farmers and help corporates in and outside India.
“These bills mention nothing of NFT. As the mandis cease to exist, farmers won’t be able to sell their produce. They will be forced to sell it to the agents sent by corporates for the price fixed by the latter,” he said.
Not only to farmers, the bills are trouble to SC/ST community and women. Lakhs of people who have been working in the mandis will lose their jobs. Gradually, the ration system will be scrapped. The only beneficiaries would be the corporates, the Congress leader added.
Antony also alleged that the bills were passed through anti-constitutional method, violating all traditions. He also added that Congress will protest until these bills are withdrawn.
Meanwhile, upping the ante on the farm bills issue, the Congress on Monday announced a massive people's movement which would include protest marches, agitations and collecting two crore farmers' signatures for a memorandum against the legislations to be submitted to President Ram Nath Kovind.
