EIA 2020: Public can express their opinion by sending mail to firstname.lastname@example.org
August 11 is the last date for the public to submit their opinions on the Central government’s Environment Impact Assessment (EIA 2020) draft. The public can send their opinions to email@example.com
The EIA 2020 draft issued by the government will bring radical changes in the current Environment Impact Assessment guidelines. The EIA draft completely avoids seeking public opinion for environmental clearance in certain regions. It also allows providing clearance for already completed projects.
The last date for giving public opinion on the EIA 2020 draft was extended to August 11 by Delhi High Court. The central government had earlier informed the court that the time period would end by June 30. However, the High Court extended the date stating that there was lack of clarity in the notification.
The Central government had informed on May 8 that a period of 60 days was allowed for submitting suggestions and opinion on the EIA draft. Even though they mentioned a period of 60 days, it was stated that this period would end by June 30. This led to ambiguities.
The government claimed that the time period of this notification, which was issued on April 11, was had expired by June 11, but it was extended to June 30 due to the lockdown. However, the High Court did not consider this argument and extended the last date to August 11.
