BEL Chairman said that BEL has not sold any EVMs or VVPATs to the Botswana Election Commission.

Bengaluru: Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) on Tuesday denied reports that has appeared in sections of media related to the EVM hackathon by Botswana Election Commission.

In an official media communication directly from BEL Chairman M V Gowtama, BEL termed the news reports as ‘completely baseless and false.’

Reports have said that BEL would be participating in a demonstration-cum-hackathon of EVMs being organised by Botswana Election Commission on May 18.

Gowtama said that BEL has not sold any EVMs or VVPATs to the Botswana Election Commission.

“Botswana Election commission has invited team from BEL to show only the functionality of EVMs and VVPATs designed to meet the specific requirements of Botswana government. These EVMs and VVPATs are different from the ones which are used by Election Commission of India,” says Gowtama.

He went on to add that no hackathon event involving any EVM of BEL has been planned or scheduled in future as well.

“Therefore, the press note issued by Botswana Election Commission is without our consent and the facts stated therein are completely false and incorrect,” he added.
