Women on a mission to dig 1000 wells to quench the thirst of a village
Thodupuzha: A group of women has turned living legends at Elamdesam, a village in Idukki district, by breaking the gender barriers to quench the thirst of the village. These women are on the mission to dig 1000 wells.
A group of six to eight women have started digging wells, a job often undertaken by men, to deal with drought in the summer. When the panchayat decided to dig well in every house, the women representatives recommended the idea.
Finally, a group of women from the village decided to take up the shovels with determination. Unfazed by criticisms, the women successfully dug well and found water in it.
The natives appreciated them for their hard work and bravery to battle unrelenting draught.
The project is being carried out under National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.
