Trans woman Sajna begins new chapter in life, opens restaurant in Aluva
Kochi: Trans woman Sajna, who was harassed and abused for selling biryanis on the wayside, celebrated the new year by opening a new restaurant. She started ‘Sajna’s kitchen’ at Malikampeedika in Aluva with the help of many including actor Jayasurya.
Sajna decided to sell biryanis on the street after the employment crisis worsened during the pandemic.
"Initially, I used to sell close to 30 biryanis per day. However, it increased to 300 biryanis per day once the business picked up. That is when certain locals began to harass me. I tried to live my life independently. Certain sections of the society were trying to destroy me as I was a transgender," Sajna said.
Actor Jayasurya stepped forward to help Sajna after the news of her harassment went viral in social media. Although Jayasurya offered his support, people were still reluctant to provide a shop for the business. Sajna found the one at Malikampeedika after a lot of effort.
Sajna’s friend Akshay decorated the interior and exterior of the shop with paintings that include cinema dialogues.
Sajna has employed 8 people as part of her new endeavour. Although she is the boss at the restaurant, Sajna still enters the kitchen to cook dishes.
The restaurant will be open from 6 am to 10 pm. ‘Sajna special meals’ is the speciality of the restaurant. It consists of chicken curry, chicken fry, beef roast and fish curry along with the meals.
