TN Prathapan MP asks for books instead of bouquets and shawls, gets 6700 books so far
Thrissur: TN Prathapan MP, who requested for books instead of bouquets and shawls in public ceremonies, received 6700 books so far. The MP’s office resembles a small library with all these books.
He will hand over the books to Priyadarshini library when the collection gets to 10,000 books. This open library was set up on eight cents of land, on the eighth day after Indira Gandhi was shot. Prathapan is the founder of this library.
Prathapan says that he has not accepted a shawl or a bouquet in any of the functions that he has attended. However, he does not discourage people who gives him other gifts unknowingly. Instead he returns those gifts and asks them for a couple of books to be sent to his office. In the next stage, the MP will give books to a library each from the seven assembly constituencies in Thrissur district. And later, he will donate books to the best college and school libraries in the district.
The MP is being honoured on January 10 in Riyad by Sarangi cultural society by giving him Voice of Democracy award. He will be given 1000 books including copy of PM Bakshi’s Indian constitution. The Malayali society in Qatar will also be giving him 500 books. In order to increase his collection, he has decided that he will go to the office or house of those people giving him more than 50 books and collect the books personally.
The MP from Thrissur has also gifted 120 books to students so far. Since he has over 3000 books at his home, he does not take any of the books he gets as donations to his home. He was even appreciated by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Mann Ki Baat for his actions.
