Alappuzha: A group of women has eased the job of political parties to find eco-friendly garlands to replace plastic garlands for the election campaign. The women under ‘Jeevanam’ tailoring unit have knitted garlands for all political parties. The tailoring unit is an association of mothers at Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai Memorial Govt. UP School here.
The state government has strictly directed to use only eco-friendly materials for the purpose of election campaign. In view of this, the women made the garlands by using cloth.
Jeevanam tailoring unit was formed in order to overcome the financial crisis of the families that resulted from the flood. It was started in association with Mathrubhumi SEED unit at the school this January.
A WhatsApp group named Flood Volunteers donated 10 sewing machines to the unit.
Women who know tailoring trained others also. 36 women who are mothers of the students of the school are included in the Jeevanam tailoring unit.
Initially, the unit focussed to stich school uniform for the students of the school to raise income. Later, they started to knit decorative garlands. Their experiment in cloth garland-making helped them to find a larger market with the elections.
Garlands and ‘Thoranam’ of all political parties are ready in this unit.
The different garlands costs Rs 35 to Rs 100. It is reported that these garlands is in great demand from the politicians in the initial phase of poll campaign.
The tailoring unit is functioning in a room at the school building.
