This community kitchen in Kochi remains open for public
Ernakulam: A community kitchen, which was started in Kochi when the lockdown was declared, still remains open for the public. It was started in CE Xavier Hall 43 days ago. Food was distributed to more than 3000 people daily from this kitchen. This community kitchen took the initiative and helped the people in need during the pandemic. It functions under the leadership of V Smart charitable society, based in Kochi.
One of the main organisers of V Smart, Naseer, said that they started it with the idea that no one should suffer from hunger during the lockdown. They decided to distribute food to people from Kumbalangi, Chellanam, Mattancherry, Fort Kochi and Palluruthi areas, where several people struggled during the lockdown. They identified and provided food to even those who preferred to starve than requesting for food. The number of people who wanted food increased day by day.
Meanwhile, several kind-hearted people provided rice, vegetables and other essentials to the kitchen. Non-vegetarian food was distributed on Sundays. Vehicles were arranged to distribute the food that was prepared in Thoppumpadi.
The demand for food has come down once lockdown was relaxed. Currently, 1200 food packets are prepared. Meals and curries will be distributed at noon and chappathi along with curry will be distributed in the evening.
There are several volunteers who help in the preparation and packing of this food. The activities are led by V Smart’s CK Naseer, MA Thaha and Wilson. KJ Maxi MLA said that they plan to keep the kitchen active until the situation returns to normalcy.
