Stray dog ‘Nanni’ gets ready to fly to Switzerland
Kollam: A stray dog named ‘Nanni’ which used to wander on the streets of Munnar will fly to Switzerland with his new masters. Foreign tourists Alan and Johny from Switzerland will adopt the animal.
It is reported that the tourists have already started to complete the formalities to adopt the dog. As part of this, microchip was installed on the neck collar of the dog and preventive medicines administered at Kollam district veterinary hospital. ‘Nanni’ also got pet passport to fly to Switzerland from Kollam.
The foreigners named the dog as ‘Nanni’ expressing gratitude to Keralites and people’s appreciation to it. When Keralites are throwing stones at stray dogs, these tourists have taken initiative to protect a stray dog.
Though ‘Nanni’ has got new masters, there are many hurdles to fly to Switzerland. Identity number and administration of rabies vaccine are mandatory. Even after administering rabies vaccine, it will be allowed to be taken to Switzerland after examining the presence of antibody. Blood sample of ‘Nanni’ will be sent to Switzerland for a lab test to confirm whether it is at risk of rabies or not. The test results will be available only after a month. In countries like Switzerland, which isdeclared rabies-free, these rules must be strictly followed while taking an animal from another country.
Till the lab results are out, Alan and Johny arranged shelter for ‘Nanni’ at their friend’s residence in Kochi for a month.
Johny and Alan who has been doing hotel business at Zurich are animal lovers. They will leave Kerala by the end of February and return in April to take the dog.
Ajith Babu, Raju and Shine Kumar, the veterinary doctors, assisted the tourists to complete the formalities of dog adoption.
