Sculptor Kanayi Kunhiraman is back to adorn Kumaranasan Memorial
Thiruvananthapuram: Kumaranasan Memorial at Thonnakkal is all set for a majestic transformation with popular sculptor Kunhiraman preparing to resume the work of the sculpture at the memorial site. The work, which has been remaining suspended for a long time, will be resumed by the sculptor on Wednesday.
Sculptures based on the characters in the poems of Kumaranasan will be ready soon. Apart from the sculptures, Kanayi will make a statue of the great Malayalam poet himself.
“We are expecting that the sculptures by Kanayi will be ready to erect at the memorial within three months,” said the Kumaranasan National Institute of Culture Chairman Prof. V Madhusoodanan Nair while addressing a press meet here.
“The institute aims to create an ambience which gives the glimpses of Kumaranasan’s poetic imagination for visitors at the memorial. At present, over thousands of people are visiting the memorial every day,” he added.
The renovation of Kumarasan memorial was started in 1998. Kanayi Kunhiraman who is an ardent fan of Kumaranasan’s poems has committed the work without any reward.
But years ago, he stopped the work over a dispute with the former administrative body of the memorial.
“I started the work as an offering to the great poet Kumaranasan as a great of his works. Some people interrupted my work without considering my passion towards it. So I forced to quit midway,” said Kanayi Kunhiraman.
The institute chairman Madhusoodanan Nair noted that Kanayi Kunhiraman has decided to resume the work here followed by the request from the new administration body.
Meanwhile, he dismissed the allegation that Kanayi refused to complete the work after receiving the payment for the work. Though Rs 20 lakh was estimated for the construction of a bronze statue in 2004, only Rs 10 lakh was given to the sculptor. Kanayi has personally spent Rs 10 lakh for the work.
It has learnt that the total expenditure for the project will exceed Rs 30 lakh followed by the price hike of raw materials. But the administration body has not taken a decision on it yet.
The statue of Kumaranasan is getting ready at Kanayi’s sculpture workshop. It will be erected in the compound of the memorial after the completion of other sculptures and garden here.
The sculpture work will be resumed on Wednesday on the occasion of Kumaranasan’s 94th death anniversary.
A commemoration meet will be held on Wednesday at Kumaranasan memorial in connection with the death anniversary. Minister Kadakampally Surendran will inaugurate the meet at 6 pm. Deputy Speaker V Sasi will deliver the commemoration speech.
Writer Prabha Varma who bagged Padma Prabha award and Vallathol award will be honoured at the function. OV Usha will inaugurate the poets meet at 3 pm.
