Schoolboy develops eco-friendly diaper from areca nut leaf
Thiruvananthapuram: A class 9 student received accolades for developing eco-friendly diapers from areca nut leaves. Niranjan, a student of Kasaragod Chayoth HS School, presented his invention at the National Children's Science Congress being held at Mar Ivanios College here.
The diaper made from dry areca nut leaf (Pala in Malayalam) decomposes even after it is abandoned after use. While making the diaper, areca nut leaf is soaked in limewater to make it soft.
Then it is dried under sun. After this, glycerine is added to make it softer and to avoid irritations on skin. Cotton and herbal mixtures are attached to this according to use.
Turkey towels also are used in the reusable diapers. Cost of making is only Rs 40. Niranjan said that the eco-friendly diapers can be used at least for one month.
