Red Cross nurse becomes life partner to paralysed man at flood relief camp in Thrissur
Ollur (Thrissur): Paralysed below waist for 7 years after falling from a coconut tree, Ollur native Jijo’s life was reduced to a wheel chair. While attempting to live a decent life with his lottery selling and a house on 3 cents of land, flood that hit the state in August 2018 shattered his life.
But now, at the flood relief camp, Jijo got a fresh start to his life as Sheeja, a Red Cross nurse, joints his life as life partner. Sheeja is the daughter of Stephan and Thressiamma, natives of Sreekandapuram.
In a modestly held event at St Joseph’s church at Vettukad, Jijo tied the knot with Sheeja. Reception and the following events were held at the relief camp. The couple will continue their life at the camp near the Primary Health Centre at Vettukad.
Hereafter, Sheeja will be a companion to Jijo (35) and his mother Ely (60).
Jijo and his mother reached the relief camp after their house and the only means of livelihood were washed away in the floods. As they have nobody, both continued at the camp when other camp dwellers returned to their houses.
A coconut climber by profession, Jijo fell from the tree 7 years ago. He injured his back bone and was paralysed below waist. Having found no means, Jijo fought against destiny by selling lotteries on a wheel chair. His father had abandoned the family earlier and his mother, Ely was affected with age-related ailments. As their house and means of living were destructed, they made the camp their home.
Jijo met Sheeja through a WhatsApp group ‘Arivinte Palazhi’, a social media group for bedridden patients. Sheeja visited Vettukad camp as part of flood relief activities and became a friend with Jijo.
Later, Sheeja said yes to Jijo’s proposal. Now, the newly wedded, helpless couple stays at the relief camp, dreaming a new life. Jijo wishes to rebuild his damaged house and buy a new wheel chair to sell lotteries. He hopes someone will help them.
