Razbin and her letter friends from 43 countries
Malappuram: Razbin Abbas is no ordinary girl. The 18-year-old girl hailing from Vadakkummuri has many stories to tell. She tells her stories through letters that she sends to people in different countries and also listens to their stories from abroad.
Razbin’s father left the family, including her mother Raheena and brother, when she was young. She had fallen into depression at a very young age and struggled her way back into life. Her family went through a lot of hardship and she suffered a lot of ordeals. She started sharing her pictures and crafts on Instagram to free herself from all the inhibitions that were holding her back.
One day, a Mexican woman, Sarah wrote below one of her posts- ‘I like your picture. If you give me your address, I will send you a gift soon.' Razbin was surprised. She gave her address and waited for months. She went running to the post office every then and now due to her impatience. Finally, after a long wait, she got Sarah’s letter and a gift with it.
Razbin was intrigued after her first letter experience. She found letter pals on social platforms. Many sought her address to send the letter to and she found out other people whom she could mail. Now Razbin has friends in 43 countries including Brazil, Italy, Canada, Spain, Turkey and Russia. She exchanges addresses with people only after she gets to know them properly. The letter writing is done in English. Most of her friends belong to the 17-23 age group.
She spoke at the International Model United Nations Online Conference about Mental Health in India. Razbin took up letter writing after her desire to learn more about other countries and about their societal atmosphere.
She joined Alphonsa College in Thiruvambady for B.Sc Psychology. She aims to work for the mental health of children of separated couples and distraught families.
Her biggest dream is to visit different countries and see her ‘letter’ friends.
