Presumed dead in plane crash, Sajad returns home after 45 years
Sasthamkotta (Kollam): After waiting for 40 years, Fathima Beevi met her son. When his mother kissed and embraced Sajad with a big smile, the onlookers struggled to hold their tears. Sajad Thangal, who was presumed dead in a plane crash almost 4 decades ago, finally returned to his mother and brothers at Mainagapally here.
Sajad Thangal left for Gulf in 1971 for a job. He was the organizer of art events there. Occasionally, he used to come home. However, he was presumed dead after the Indian Airlines plane crash on October 12, 1976, in Mumbai. It was the same accident in which actress Ranichandra also died. Sajad had also booked a ticket in the flight to come home on that day, but cancelled the trip in the last minute.
The death of a close friend in the accident also changed his life. With this, he left Gulf and reached Mumbai. He engaged in different works there and didn’t keep any contact with his family.
As years passed, age related ailments began to plague him. After getting bedridden, his friend took him to Panvel SEAL Ashram. The Ashram authorities paved the way for his return. Sajad was brought to Mynagappally by his brothers on Saturday.
Fathima Beevi, 92, had been eagerly waiting for her son’s return. When he arrived, her ailments and anxiety gave way to happiness. The seven brothers who were waiting to see their sibling gave Sajad a big hug. They all celebrated his return.
