Police install ‘bell of trust’ at houses to help elderly people living alone
Kottiyam (Kollam): Janamaithri Police here have introduced a new programme for helping the elderly people in the locality. An equipment with a bell ringing system has been installed at households for ensuring security of the senior citizens.
As part of this programme called 'Viswasathinte Mani' (the bell of trust), the police will hand over an electronic equipment to a volunteering family who are willing to help within 100 metre distance from the houses of the elderly persons who live alone.
The remote control of the equipment will be given to the senior citizens. If they are in need of any help, they can press the button on the remote control which will ring a bell at the volunteering family’s house.
The family can approach the elderly people who rings the bell and inquire about what help they need. Also they can call the police, if necessary. The programme will benefit senior citizens who live within the station limit without anyone to support.
In the initial phase of the project, six senior citizens are selected. Kottiyam SI Thrideep Chandran and other officers handed over the equipment to the selected elderly persons and explained the method of operating it to them.
