Police gift new bicycle to man who helped nab chain snatcher
Cherthala: A group of policemen honoured a tailor for helping them nab a criminal. Arthungal police saved small amounts from their salary and bought a new bicycle for Cherthala Mayithara native Soman (66) who sacrificed his cycle for nabbing a chain snatcher.
An attempt was made to snatch the chain of a woman passenger near Thiruvizha Railway Station on April 5. A man who arrived on a bike tried to snatch her chain when she was returning home after PSC coaching. Soman who was coming on his bicycle in the opposite direction saw the incident and adventurously trapped the man.
The thief identified as Shafi from Aryad was driving the bike in high speed when Soman pushed his bicycle to the front of the bike. Thus Shafi lost balance and fell down. By this time, auto drivers Aneesh and Sugathan caught him and handed him over to Arthungal police. Soman’s bicycle was completely damaged after the bike ran over it.
Considering his effort, the police officers at Arthungal police station collected an amount from the salary in May and bought a new bicycle for Soman. A cycle priced Rs 5200 was bought by 44 police officers of the station.
In a ceremony held at the station, District Police Chief K. M. Tomy handed over the cycle to Soman. Arthungal SI A. B. Bipin appreciated Soman for his courageous act.
