On World Literacy Day, meet this 108-yr-old granny who fell in love with words in her 90s
Adoor (Pathanamthitta): When the entire world is celebrating the World Literacy Day 2021, a granny from Kerala proudly says “I am literate”. Sara Umma, a 108-year-old granny from Mettumpuram region of Adoor in Pathanamthitta, is learning words in its full spirit.
It was at the age of 96, Sara Umma fell in love with words. The elderly woman who was an illiterate until then started learning the letters by joining the classes in the Swaraj library nearby. The president of the library, S Meera Sahib is her first teacher.
The learning process was initially slow, but she gradually equipped herself with words. With her determination, she started to read newspapers and magazines. Likewise, she appeared for the examinations conducted by the Literacy Mission. Sara Umma also has marked entry to the world of digital technology by learning computer in 2020.
Though Sara Umma’s eyesight has slightly declined due to age, she is able to watch television, said her daughter-in-law Saleena, who is also an ASHA worker. The granny could also understand the letters in the computer with the help of her grandchildren. Sara Umma is a mother of five and is staying with her younger son Noorudheen.
