On World Literacy Day, Karthyayani Amma is busy learning via online for next exam
Haripad (Alappuzha): Muttom native Karthyayani Amma, the oldest student in the country, is busy learning via online for the 7th standard equivalency examination even on World Literacy Day.
She had secured first rank in Aksharalaksham examination and also passed 4th standard equivalency examination with good marks. She aspires to complete 10th standard equivalency exam too. In order to achieve that, she has to pass 7th standard first.
The lessons are sent to the WhatsApp group of literacy motivators (prerak). They hand over the same to the learners. Karthyayni Amma's motivator is her neighbour Sathi. She sends the lessons via email and mobile to Karthyayni Amma and she learns with the help of her grandchildren.
Karthyayni Amma has the laptop gifted by minister C Raveendranath. In order to see the letters in larger size, she depends on laptop mostly. She used to learn Malayalam, English and Mathematics till now. She has to learn Hindi also for 7th standard equivalency exam. She said that English is easy to learn, but Hindi is very tough.
Inspiring the literacy students all over the country, Karthyayani Amma was awarded Nari Shakti Puraskar last year. In January 2021, Karthyayani Amma will turn 99. With this, she will be the oldest literacy student in the world, said the literacy motivators.
