On 60th anniversary, Chakkittapara Cooperative bank gifts 3 buses to locals
Kozhikode: The Chakkittapara Service Cooperative Bank has fulfilled a long-time dream of the natives by launching a bus service. The bank has presented two line buses and a tourist bus for the transportation of the local people, as a gift on its 60th anniversary.
Though Chakkittapara is a link between Peruvannamoozhi and Kakkayam, two major tourist spots in the district, it had no public transportation facilities. There were only few bus services from Perambra to Chakkittapara. So the locals used to rely on parallel services of auto rickshaws and jeeps.
The jeep service from Perambra stops by 6 in the evening and the people have to wait for at least 12 passengers for a trip. The bank decided to end these difficulties by starting two line bus services. The bus has 9 services per day from Perambra to Peruvannamoozhi and vice versa. The service starts at 6.25 am every day and ends by 9 pm.
Though the buses were purchased 8 months ago, the revised Motor Vehicle Act of the central government became a barrier to star services. Also it took a while to complete the registration and other formalities of the bus. The fund for both the buses was found from the treasury of the bank.
About Rs 47 lakh was spent for both line buses and Rs 45 lakh for the tourist bus. The National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) had granted financial assistance to the tourist bus. Modern facilities like mini theatre has been arranged in the tourist bus, said Bank President James Edachery.
Four woman conductors are working in the line buses. Though they considered lady staff for other job positions also, no applications were received, he said. The staff was selected by advertising in the media and conducting interview.
The locals arranged a warm welcome for the bus service initiated by the bank. They have named the buses ‘Bank Bus’. The natives said that the bus service is the most useful of the numerous popular projects initiated by the bank.
