Now pregnant women can have companion during childbirth at Kozhikode Med College
Kozhikode: Kozhikode Medical College has initiated the ‘Companion in Labour’ programme which would enable the presence of close relatives with the woman during labour. The woman can be accompanied by either her mother, mother- in- law or sister. Through this programme, the hospital intends to minimise the anxiety and stress of the woman during delivery and ensure normal delivery.
This programme, which is part of central government’s ‘Lakshya’ scheme, was implemented from November 5. IMCH superintendent Dr. C Sreekumar said that as the facilities improve, husbands can also accompany their wives.
Doctors recommend that those who can provide emotional and psychological support to the pregnant women can accompany them. They will be given counselling before entry to the labour room. Since, this is the first phase of the programme, only relatives of 4 women can be given entry at a time.
The scheme was first implemented in Punalur Taluk hospital, under the name ‘Arike’. It was also implemented in Parippally Medical College.
