Rajani and her son had arrived at Kadalundi river near Parakkadavu pump house for bathing and washing clothes on Friday by 8.30 in the morning. Navaneeth fell into the river while trying to step down to water from the rocks on the shore.
Watching him drown in water, Rajani jumped in to save him. But she also started drowning in the river. The women who were near the river bank raised alarm on seeing the mishap. Gafoor was angling at another side of the river. On hearing the cry, he jumped into the river and saved both mother and her son.
As the water scarcity intensified, more people have started depending on river for bathing and washing clothes. Kadalundi river had witnessed many incidents of drowning last year also. Most of the accidents occur when people get trapped in deep pits in the river. The locals warned everyone to stay alert while stepping into the river.
