Most bird species found in Kerala Agri varsity campus: Study
Thrissur: A national survey result shows that college campuses in Kerala are rich in different varieties of birds. The finding was the result of the campus bird count conducted by the bird lovers’ community Bird Count India Consortium. The study was part of the Great Backyard Bird Count Survey 2018 in order to encourage bird watching.
Out of the 157 institutions in 20 states, Kerala Agricultural University in Mannuthy came first. Pariyaram Government Ayurveda College was placed 7th and College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences in Pookode was 9th. Kerala is the only state which has three of its campuses placed in the top 10 of the list.
As per the statistics, about 1200 types of birds are found in the country, and 463 of them were spotted in the survey. 174 species of birds were found in Kerala.
The Agricultural University prepared a list of 1232 birds and spotted 127 varieties of birds for the survey. Government Ayurveda College gave a list of 117 birds and spotted 64 types, whereas College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences made a list of 107 birds and found 102 of them.
The survey in the Agricultural University campus was conducted by the Centre for Wild Sciences of the university. The presence of Peechi forest area, campus in 900 acres and excellent preservation were factors that positively influenced the bird count, said Head of the Department Dr. P. O. Nameer.
