Mary Thomas bags 'Udyana Shreshta' award
Mulanthuruthy: For Mary Thomas, gardening is not a hobby but a way of life. And her dedication to gardening has now won her the 'Udyana Shreshta' award of the state government.
For the past seven years she is engaged in Orchid farming.
The award will be presented to her at a function in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday.
Mary’s husband Thomas, who took voluntary retirement from the Central Railways is also helping her in the farming now. What started as a hobby in their 20 cents of land is now an income source for the whole family.
Different varieties of orchids, roses and hibiscus features in her garden. Apart from ornamental plants, Mary ventures to growing different fruits including Israel orange, Chinese orange, Mulberry and Milk fruit.
She mainly uses bio fertilizers and pesticides for farming.
Mary is also involved in ornamental fish farming.
