Locals repair hanging bridge at Rs 2.5 lakh; authorities' estimate cost Rs 15 lakh
Edavanna (Malappuram): Locals have completed the repair works of Pannippara- Pottikadavu hanging bridge, which was estimated to cost around Rs. 15 lakhs by the authorities, for Rs. 2.5 lakhs. The bridge connects Edavanna and Urangattiri panchayats.
After the repair, the locals also set up a board that revealed the costs. However, this board has been destroyed by miscreants and that led to suspicion.
During the last floods, the slabs of the hanging bride were destroyed. This made the lives of the residents hard as people, including the students, found it difficult to move to the other side. It was the engineering department of Areekode block panchayat that estimated Rs. 15 lakhs as the repair cost. They informed about this to PK Basheer MLA as well, who was in charge of the constituerncy. But, the locals could not afford to wait that long.
Hence, a committee was formed with K Zakir Hussain as the chairman and Yousuf Mundodan as the convener two months back. They approached, Hussain Haji, Malappuram-based contractor, for the repairing the bridge. He estimated a budget of Rs. 2.48 lakh for the completion of the project.
The board that mentioned the cost of repairing also had the names of Hussain Haji and other committee members but miscreants painted black paint over it.
