Kochi woman pursuing PhD while working as hotel supplier
Kochi: The people passing by Aroor-Edakochi route might have seen an energetic and smart lady serving food and tea to the customers in a small tea stall on the roadside. But very few of them now that she conducts research on marine biology amid this busy work.
Ardra has been playing this double role as hotel supplier and student for the last 10 years. She started working in the hotel after completing 10th standard. She completed BSc Zoology and MSc Marine Biology while working as hotel supplier. Now she is pursuing PhD in Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT).
Ardra’s father Appukuttan and mother Molly are operating the tea stall in a rented room. Appukuttan was a porter and mason earlier, and he opened the tea shop later. Ardra helps her parents by making tea, serving food and washing vessels from 6 am to 9 am. Then she goes to college. Once she returns, she continues working in the hotel till 10 pm.
“My parents have struggled a lot to raise us. So, I felt that I should help them as much as I can. I can make tea and other snacks. I reach the college late sometimes. But my teachers and friends know about my background and they help a lot,” Ardra said.
Ardra is researching about crabs in Vembanad lake. She said that she used to get pinched by crabs while catching them as part of her study. But she has mastered the art and about to complete her research. She is also planning to open a tea stall for her father after get a good job.
