Ismail's inland shrimp farming bags national award
Vellangallur (Thrissur): Overcoming the flood impact, Vemballur native K J Ismail won the second prize in inland shrimp farming organised by National Fisheries Development Board.
The award will be conferred during the National Fish Farmers Day Celebration on Wednesday in Hyderabad.
Ismail’s shrimp farm located at Pathekkar in Vellangallur panchayat in Thrissur district. He began farming five years back after ending his job in Gulf country. In the 2018 flood, his farm was deluged and caused a loss of Rs 25 lakhs.
However, Ismail decided to resume his farming due to the compulsion by the nodal officer of fisheries department Anish and promoter Vidya. His shrimp farming has the technical support of The Marine Products Exports Development Authority for the last three years.
Ismail follows the Heterotrophic Auto Recycling Aquaculture Technology developed by Marine Fish Hatchery at Pozhiyur of Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Aquaculture (RGCA). No chemicals or antibiotics were used in farming.
This method helped him to increase the surviving rate of the fishlings and reduce the quantity of fish feed.
Ismail farms the vannamei variety of shrimp distributed by RGCA from Puducherry. He deposited 4 lakh fishlings in the pond this year which was harvested in 168 days. He collected 8000 kg shrimps.
