In a first, Joseph casts vote with amputated arm
Thrippunithura (Ernakulam): “I never thought I would be able to cast vote with this arm. I’m voting with my amputated arm for the first time and I’m very happy,” said Udayamperoor native K G Joseph. He had been voting with his toe all these years.
Joseph had lost both his arms below the elbow. He cast his vote at booth number 100 in Udayamperoor VJB School. Joseph is a lottery agent.
“The polling officers smeared the indelible ink on my left leg. Instead of signing, I pressed the big toe of my left leg in the stamp pad. The voting machine was placed in the level of my waist. So, I could press the button with portion of my arm and cast the vote,” Joseph said.
When Joseph went to cast vote in the local body election, he struggled to cast vote. He had applied for postal ballot this time. Though he produced the disability certificate to the officials, no action was taken. With this, he had to cast vote at the booth.
Joseph lost both his arms at the age of 12 in a train accident. He was hit by the door of the compartment and happened to fall between the train and platform. He lives with wife Mary.
