Girl students to be taught cycling from next academic year
Kannur: The girl students in Kannur corporation will go cycling in next academic year. The corporation has provided bicycles to 91 schools in government and aided sector.
‘Ladybird’ brand bicycles for girls manufactured by BSA were distributed in the schools. Two bicycles were granted to schools where more number of students are studying. It is planned to start training the students in cycling from next academic year onwards. Some schools have already started training the students during the vacation.
All the girls in schools will be taught cycling within one year. The mission will be completed with the cooperation of PTA and youth clubs. The girls from primary to secondary level will be given training. The bicycles were distributed including in the annual programme. The project expense is Rs 5 lakh.
A fund has been allocated in this year’s budget to encourage cycling. Rs 2 lakh has been allocated for training and other purposes. There are also plans to form cycle clubs in every school from next academic year onwards. Cycle sharing centres will start in 5 places. Rs 40 lakh was allocated to implement this system.
