Kaduthuruthy: This is indeed a proud moment in Dr S Unnikrishnan Nair's life. Heading one of the prestigious space programme of India, Gaganyaan-2021 mission, is a dream come true for this Kothanalloor native.
Unnikrishnan is appointed as the new director of Human Space Flight Centre. It is a 20-member Bengaluru based group assigned for the Gaganyaan mission. Unnikrishnan was serving as the mission director of VSSC in Thiruvananthapuram when his new appointment came to him.
Crew Module Atmospheric Reentry Experiment (CARE) Project developed in 2014 and pad abort test tried in December 2018 were under the supervision of Unnikrishnan. Both projects were intended to develop new technologies that help to carry man to space. The new appointment in Gaganyaan might be because of the success of these projects, said Unnikrishnan to Mathrubhumi.
Unnikrishnan Nair is the son of late Sreedharan Nair, a staff of survey office, Kottayam and Rajamma. He completed his schooling at Emmanuels School, Kothanalloor and NSS School, Manjoor. Further education was at Deva Matha College, Kuravilangad and Mar Athanesius College, Kothamangalam. He completed his M. Tech from Bengaluru Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and a doctorate from IIT Chennai.
Jaya G Nair, a former staff of VSSC is his wife. His both daughters are students; Aiswarya (College of Architecture, Thiruvananthapuram) and Chaithanya (St Thomas School, Thiruvananthapuram).
