Free food for poor, no food for drunkards; Vadakara police launches ‘Akshayapathram’
Vadakara: The people of Vadakara need not stay hungry anymore for having an empty pocket. The police here have set up ‘Akshayapathram’, a project to provide free food for the needy.
One year back, the police had successfully implemented ‘Akshayapathram’ project in Kannur. The then Kannur DySP P. P. Sadanandan who spearheaded the project in Kannur has been transferred to Vadakara. He in the forefront of the scheme in Vadakara too. He said that the project will be ready within a week.
A cabin for ‘Akshayapathram’ has been built under the banyan tree in the middle of the traffic unit and new control room office opposite the railway station. It was constructed by Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society for free. A home guard will be appointed here to run the food cabin.
A food chiller for keeping the food fresh and hot will be set up in the coming days. It is contributed by One Two Three Group in Vadakara. A Facebook community named ‘Athazhakkoottam’ has taken up the responsibility to bring food every day. Also any organisation can contribute food with the permission of the police.
Anyone who does not have money to buy food can collect food from here. Drunken persons will not be given any food. People who regularly collect food from here will be noted and their case will be studied in detail in order to ensure rehabilitation. Also those who misuse the facility will be monitored.
DySP Sadanandan said that the project has been a success in Kannur. On an average, 70 persons are provided free food there. Many organisations come forward offering food. The police decided to start the project after noticing that small thefts take place for food. They assume that such crimes will decrease if food is provided.
