Fighting cancer, Avani gets top grade in singing at Youth Fest
Kanhangad (Kasaragod): When Avani recited the poem ‘Ushas’ written by M. N. Paloor, she was literally awakening the audience with her sweet but strong voice despite the difficulties of chemotherapy. Just as she bravely survived cancer, she won an ‘A’ grade in the recitation.
A class 9 student of Venjarammoodu Government Higher Secondary School in Thiruvananthapuram, Avani used to fight destiny by singing prayer song at school assembly every day.
Avani has been an active participant at youth festival venues from class 1 onwards. She was diagnosed with cancer November last year, when she was in class 8.
As treatment had to be completed, she had to take a little break from the school. But she did not push herself into depression and held music close to her heart during tough times. She won a scholarship of the Union Ministry of Culture for learning Carnatic music.
Avani could not participate in state school youth festival last year as she was undergoing cancer treatment. She compensated it this year by winning ‘A’ grade in recitation and Kathakali music also.
Avani’s father Santhosh, a vegetable vendor, mother Sajitha and her teachers at school give her strong support. Kalabharathi Biju Narayanan and Neeraj are Avani’s music teachers.
