Entangled bird struggles for 4 hrs on tree top; rescued by fire force
Guruvayur: A heron struggled for life for about 4 hours after its leg got trapped in the branch of a gigantic tree in front of Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple. It was also being attacked by crows. The people tried to keep the crows away by pelting stones at them, but in vain. Finally, the fire force personnel reached to rescue the poor bird.
The incident took place on Monday by 9 am. A group of children spotted the heron hanging down from a tree near the elephant camp at the south yard of the temple. They informed the security guards on the temple premises.
A string had got stuck on the heron’s leg and it seemed to have trapped on the branch of the tree while the bird was flying. When the temple authorities called the fire force personnel, they replied that the rules do not allow them to rescue birds.
Following this, Guruvayur Devaswom chairman K. B. Mohandas contacted fire force personnel. They officers rushed to the spot after getting permission from district fire officer. With the help of Guruvayur municipality and Devaswom health department staff, they cut the branch of the tree and released the heron.
Though the heron was let free, it could not fly as its leg was bruised. It fell down after trying to fly for some distance. Later, the temple authorities handed over the bird to veterinary department after giving water and untying the string from its leg. The bird was identified as a ‘Cattle Egret’.
The rescue mission was completed under the leadership of assistant station officer Sreekumar, Devaswom health supervisor Rajeev, municipality health inspectors K. Rajeevan and K. Sujith.
