Engineers team up for friend injured in accident, develop unique wheelchair
Thrissur: Don Paul and C Sooraj, two young engineers, joined hands to develop a wheelchair which helps the patients to stand and lie down on their own.
Their discovery was dedicated to a friend, KS Vishnu, who passed BTech in 2016 from Thrissur Govt. Engineering college along with them. They decided to make the wheelchair after Vishnu got bedridden following an accident.
When the duo reached the incubation unit at Thrissur Govt. Engineering College with the idea of this wheelchair, the authority asked them to explain the scope of the project’s success. Replying to them, Don and Sooraj stated that Vishnu, one among the three named in the entrepreneurship application motivated them for the project. After coming to know about the story of friendship, the authority approved the project.
Vishnu, Don and Sooraj who are close friends, vowed that they will be together in failure and success while passing out from the college. Keeping the promise, Don and Sooraj started manufacturing the wheelchair adding Vishnu as a partner in their invention and business.
To execute the project, the duo dropped many of their other plans. When Don quit his civil service coaching, Sooraj resigned a weel-earning job for the wheelchair manufacturing project.
The duo decided to drop their dream and job after Vishnu met with the accident. They wanted to develop a machine which support Vishnu and many others like him who are confined to bed.
When they successfully developed the wheelchair which helps the patient to stand and lie down on their own, they got another happy news. Vishnu who was bedridden started to walk as a positive result of the treatment. Later, he also joined in the entrepreneurship with his friends. They established their own company to manufacture more patient-friendly wheelchairs.
At present, three types of wheelchairs developed by this team are available in the market.
After recovering from the health issues, Vishnu joined government service.
Now, Don Paul and Sooraj are busy with making of a most modern hoist machine which helps the hospital staff to safely lift patients and aged from vehicles. MS Sarath, their junior in the college, has also joined them in their company.
