Elephant owners association begins ‘Aanayoottu’ across Kerala
Kalavoor: Elephant Owners Association declared that they will ensure no elephant is starving in the state. The association will sponsor the food for the elephants as all programmes are cancelled as part of the COVID-19 prevention.
The state-level inauguration of the ‘Aanayoottu’ was held at the residence of association state president G Krishna Prasad in Kalavoor on Thursday. Travancore Devaswom Board member KS Ravi inaugurated the event.
Elephants Raja, Jayakrishnan and Madhavan took part in the ‘Aanayoottu’ .
‘Aanayoottu’, a ceremony in the Malayalam month of Karkidakam benefited the elephant owners to meet the expenditure on the food of the elephants. Usually, elephants are not paraded for the customs in temples during this month.
Hence, elephants were taken to ‘Aanayoottu’ ceremony in various temples. The owners will give money to the mahout for travel and other expenditure. From taking part in the ‘Aanayootu’ ceremony, the elephants will get the food for the rejuvenation therapy. It is learned that Rs 3,000 is spent on elephant food per day for rejuvenation therapy.
Rice mixed with turmeric, ragi and jaggery and other items like a special mixture of fruits, peas and wheat, horse gram, banana and herbs are served to elephants in ‘Aanayoottu’ ceremony.
