Kottayam: A domestic elephant, Viswanathan, got stuck in the mud in a farmland for more than two hours on Saturday evening. After much efforts, he was rescued with the help of another elephant, Vinod.
22-year-old Viswanathan who was unfastened for a bath, ran half a kilometre through the heavy traffic from the Cherukarakkavu temple premises to the Karapuzha Arupathilchira farmland.
He got stuck in the marshy farmland. Though Viswanathan tried his best to get out of it, his escape efforts ended in vain. Even the efforts by the mahouts to rescue the elephant was not successful.
Owner of the elephant, Dr. Vinod Viswanathan and his sister Smitha, reached the place and on their suggestion another elephant from their farmland, 13-year-old Vinod who was used for hauling logs in forest operations, was brought to the venue to save Viswanathan.
The rescue attempts continued with a rope tied to the trunk of Viswanathan and tugged by Vinod. Things were getting tougher as no crane or tipper could be brought here due to the width of the road. Later on, Vinod was successful in his efforts in saving Viswanathan.
Both the elephants were welcomed with claps and sweets afterwards.
